Violet / UV-C Germicidal Lighting System
The demand for effective, repeatable ambulance decontamination increased significantly during the pandemic, prompting many agencies to explore improvised solutions. What the market ultimately required was a purpose-built UV-C germicidal lighting system that was intelligent, robust, and customizable for EMS operations.
Violet was developed in direct response to that need. It is the world’s first LED UV-C germicidal lighting system designed specifically for the patient compartment of an ambulance and is supported by the same Advance Exchange Lifetime Warranty offered across the FireTech product line.
A Germicidal Lighting System Designed for EMS
Violet is an automatic UV-C germicidal lighting system that operates in the background to irradiate an unoccupied patient compartment while crews perform other duties. The system runs for a predetermined duration and continuously monitors multiple safety inputs to ensure the space remains unoccupied.
Audible announcements notify personnel when decontamination is beginning, actively running, and complete. If the ambulance is required for service, the system can be immediately interrupted, stopping the process without delay.
Unlike aerosolized decontamination systems, Violet halts operation instantly if vehicle occupancy is detected through door sensors, seatbelt triggers, or motion detection.
System Architecture
The Violet system is built around two core components: surface-mounted Violet Emitters and the Violet User Interface Panel. These components work together to deliver controlled UV-C exposure while maintaining strict safety oversight.
The system can automatically operate before and after calls and logs each cycle to onboard memory. These logs may be downloaded and referenced alongside patient care records if desired for internal documentation.
Violet User Interface Panel
The Violet User Interface Panel serves as the central control unit for the entire system. It houses all programming and logic required for operation and features an OLED display, emergency stop button, manual decontamination button, and four integrated function buttons within the FireTech logo for intuitive navigation.
Two indicator lights display system status, identifying when the system is active and when decontamination has been completed.
On the rear of the panel are terminals for sensor inputs, including seatbelt sensors, door triggers, parking brake input, and the PIR/ultrasonic occupancy sensor. At a minimum, the occupancy sensor is required for system operation, while other inputs are optional depending on vehicle configuration and agency preference.
The panel is designed to be mounted in the ambulance action area, within reach of the primary medic seated at the front of the gurney.
Violet Emitters
Violet Emitters are surface-mounted UV-C LED fixtures installed in the ceiling of the patient compartment. These emitters deliver high-output UV-C light to interior surfaces and form the backbone of the decontamination system.
Each emitter contains eight Luminus XST-3535-UV LEDs producing wavelengths in the 275–286 nm range. Power draw per emitter is approximately 25 watts, operating on 9–32V DC.
A minimum of two emitters is required per system, with support for up to eight emitters depending on compartment size and coverage requirements.
Occupancy Sensor
The Occupancy Sensor is the minimum required safety input for the Violet system. It combines passive infrared and ultrasonic motion sensing to detect the presence of any occupant within the patient compartment.
The sensor must be positioned to monitor all areas exposed to UV-C emission. It is powered directly by the Violet User Interface Panel and draws approximately 0.88 watts.
Calculated dose and effectiveness of germicidal systems must be evaluated by the purchasing agency. HiViz makes no claim regarding the specific effectiveness of UV-C germicidal light in any application. Agencies are encouraged to consult qualified professionals when evaluating UV-C decontamination systems for ambulance use.
